A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
